Intercell Announces Initiation Of Further Phase II Clinical Trial Of V710 An Investigational Vaccine To Prevent S. Aureus Infection
announced that its collaborator Merck & Co., Inc. has initiated a Phase II
clinical trial of V710, an investigational vaccine for the prevention of
Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infections. This randomized double blind,
placebo controlled study aims to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of
the vaccinum candidate in patients with end-stage kidney disease on
hemodialysis. This trial commence follows the initiation of a come apart Phase
II trial in December 2007.
Gerd Zettlmeissl, CEO of Intercell, commented "We ar very pleased that
our strategic pardner Merck has chosen to initiate a further Phase II
clinical trial. We look ahead to continued progress of the plan
building on clinical data obtained so far."
The S. aureus vaccine prospect is based on a conserved protein antigen
observed by Intercell and commissioned to Merck & Co., Inc. in 2004 on an
exclusive worldwide footing. Merck is responsible for clinical development,
manufacturing and marketing. Intercell is eligible to get milestone
payments and royalties on future net gross revenue. In Phase I clinical trials the
S. aureus candidate vaccine was shown to be immunogenic and generally well
tolerated.
Hospital-acquired Infections
Hospital-acquired infections caused by bacteria ar one of the major
causes of death and serious sickness. Intercell has embarked on a large
scale, comprehensive and multi-target antigen designation program to
contribute to vaccine efforts in this field. Besides Merck's S. aureus
vaccinum, based on an antigen identified by Intercell, Intercell is
development a vaccine against hospital-acquired infections caused by
Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Phase II/III trial is expected to be initiated in
2008) and a Pneumococcus vaccine (Phase I trials planned for end 2008).
Furthermore Intercell has ongoing pre-clinical programs for Enterococcus
and Klebsiella vaccine discovery.
About S. aureus
S. aureus is the to the highest degree frequent case of hospital-acquired infections.
In addition to bloodstream infections with a mortality rate of up to 35%,
infections of bone, meat and other inner organs are ahead to serious
health complications, death and economic load. Today, some 50%
of S. aureus strains isolated in hospitals worldwide are resistant to
multiple antibiotics, rendering staphylococcal disease management
increasingly hard and intriguing. Hospital-acquired infections are
1 of the major causes of death and serious illness world-wide, resulting
in an annual burden of more than USD 20 billion in the developed world. In
the United States alone, about iI million patients become infected
annually piece receiving health care in hospitals.

New Study: Pine Bark Significantly Reduces Menstrual Pain
dysmenorrhea, a condition that causes passing painful menstrual periods
touching millions of women each year, canful be reduced naturally by taking
Pycnogenol(R) (pic-noj- en-all), pine bark extract from the French maritime
pine tree. The multi- center field study, published in the Journal of
Reproductive Medicine, shows women with dysmenorrhea wHO supplemented with
Pycnogenol(R) experient less pain and needed less pain medications
during menstruation.
"Dysmenorrheal pain is thought to be caused by exalted levels of
inflammation and characterized by menstrual cramping pain, which may get through
incapacitating rigor," said Dr. Nobutaka Suzuki, lead researcher of the
study. "Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) like aspirin or
ibuprofen provide temporary help against menstrual pain. Unfortunately,
they are generally ineffective for resolution spasmodic events and normally
cause side effects, particularly gastric problems."
Numerous published studies bring out Pycnogenol's(R) effectivity in
relieving menstrual disorders, such as relief of menstrual pain and
adenomyosis, and it is patent protected for this application. Additional
studies reveal Pycnogenol(R) is a natural anti-inflammatory, which provides
the base for the rational to use Pycnogenol(R) to naturally moderate
incitive pain sensation involved in menstruation. A study promulgated
last year in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine revealed that
Pycnogenol(R) significantly reduces symptoms of adenomyosis by 33
percent. This study too demonstrated that Pycnogenol(R) does not exercise any
estrogen-like activity, which considerably adds to the safety for women world Health Organization
seek serve for painful periods.
The randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted at
four-spot Japanese hospitals (Kanazawa University Hospital, Keiju Medical
Center, Hamamatsu University Hospital and Sugiura Clinic) and sampled 116
women, aged 18-48, suffering from menstrual hurting.
Patients were monitored for five menstrual cycles. They were supplied
with a diary to note the pain during days of menstruation, which was
evaluated using the established Visual Analog Scale. The number one two
pre-treatment menstrual cycles were utilized for establishing base-line
values for pain in the neck sensation and NSAID analgesics. During the following two
menstrual cycles women were randomly assigned to groups receiving day-to-day
regimens of Pycnogenol(R) or placebo. Thereafter, supplementation was
discontinued to investigate the recurrence of symptoms. The use of NSAID
analgesics was non restricted during the entire study. However, patients
were required to note the dose and the type of analgesics, as well as the
time taken in their diary.
Results showed treatment with Pycnogenol(R) lowered pain in the ass during
menstruum, which was reflected by a substantial reduction of NSAID used.

Michael imparts farewell gift to fans
Folks really ought to stop referring to George Michaels current Live 25 tour as a comeback jaunt. The more appropriate term is swan song.
Though he started an hour late due to a delayed plane, Michaels near-capacity gig at the TD Banknorth Garden last night was a surprisingly consistent 2-hour torrent of r & b confections. Curfew be damned, the shows second half was barely under way at press time. But his insistence on going ahead as planned attests to the true reasoning behind the tour: Now making the final round of its two-year worldwide run, this tour is a parting gift to his fans - Michael wants to move beyond his musical career into other endeavors.
Michael emerged in a plain black suit and slammed into Fast Love, a tune about living in the moment that transformed the Garden into a dancing mass.
The celebratory groove continued throughout the first set, which included wham-bam gooey Motown jam Im Your Man as well as a trio of club bangers: An Easier Affair, Too Funky and Star People. His cover of Ewan MacColls The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - not an easy number to sing - upped the goose-pimple factor considerably, and Father Figure soared with the aid of his angelic six-piece choir.
The stage set and degree of sonic clarity were both fantastic. The band was dispersed on three tiers, and the vibrant video screen behind Michael sloped onto the floor, creating a lively, cinematic feel.
In place of Wake Me Up Before You Go Go and I Want Your Sex were songs that showcased his velvety-soul crooning (Kissing a Fool, Nina Simones Feelin Good). And appearing in a cop uniform for Outside, an ode to alfresco promiscuity, was proof positive that Michael has a sense of humor about some of his tabloid faux pas.
Indeed, the 45-year-old crooner admitted that hes been difficult to love at times. But before he was even halfway through, hed made an indelible impression. Shaking his tush and moving from one side of the stage to the other, Michael proved you neednt indulge in stiff choreography, garish costume changes and vocal fills to deliver a riveting arena show.
GEORGE MICHAEL at TD Banknorth Garden, last night.

A leading light in the punk-pop writing style, Motion City Soundtrack includes members Joshua Cain (guitar), Tony Thaxton (drums), Justin Pierre (vocals/guitar), Jesse Johnson (Moog), and Matthew Taylor (basso). Following their senior high graduation, Minneapolis natives Pierre and Cain -- both of whom were elysian by Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbox, the Flaming Lips, and Superchunk -- formed the band in 1999. The deuce musicians distinct to leave their hometown of Richmond, VA, to join Motion City Soundtrack full-time, and the expanded band before long entered the studio apartment with producer/engineer Ed Rose (the Get Up Kids, Ultimate Facebook). Three weeks before recording commenced, they were besides coupled by keyboardist Jessie Johnson (whose personal record label, Ordinary Records, had issued some of Jimmy Eat World's earliest corporeal in 1995) to lighten singer/guitarist Pierre of his synthesist duties.
With a new lineup firmly in place, the band's punk-glazed debut, I Am the Movie, was released in the summertime of 2003. While playing venues and basements in support of the album, Motion City Soundtrack was picked up by Epitaph Records; later, they joined blink-182 on a turn through Europe and Japan. A sumptuous interpretation of the album (dispatch with bonus DVD) appeared in 2006, and the band exhausted the summer on Warped Tour before bearing to Europe with OK Go that fall. Entering the studio for the third gear time, Motion City Soundtrack began to bring with producers Adam Schlesinger (of Fountains of Wayne), Eli Janney (of Girls Against Boys), and Ric Ocasek (of the Cars). Amy Winehouse - Winehouse 2 Million Performance Faced Axe
LATEST: AMY WINEHOUSE's $2 million (GBP1 million) Russian gig was almost axed after the star allegedly failed to sober up for her performance.
The Back To Black singer was asked by Daria Zhukova, the girlfriend of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, to sing in front of a select group of art fans at The Garage gallery in Moscow, which Zhukova helped to set up.
But the exclusive one-hour performance on Thursday (12Jun08) night was almost cancelled after the Grammy award winner arrived from London "in no condition to appear," reports the New York Daily News.
A source tells the publication, Winehouse was in such an incoherent state, organisers discussed finding a last-minute replacement to sing at the event.
However, time constraints left them with little choice other than allowing the singer to take the stage as planned.
Winehouse's entourage then "spent two hours trying to pull her together," before she finally appeared in front of the expectant crowd.
The source adds, "I heard that her singing was a little sloppy. But she still put on a terrific show."

Ringo Starr - Starr Unfazed By Childhood House Demolition
LATEST: Former BEATLE RINGO STARR is unfazed by the proposed demolition of his childhood home in Liverpool, England.
The rocker's former house in the city's Madryn Street is all set to be knocked down after officials at English Heritage decided against listing the building as a national treasure.
English Heritage executives argue the home has no real links to the Beatles, because Starr moved out of the property when he was a child.
But Starr insists he really isn't bothered about the campaign to save the property.
He tells U.S. talk show host Larry King, "I don't mind. They had a big campaign to save my house, the house I was born and lived in my first five years, and put it somewhere else. I never thought, you know, why would you put it somewhere else? This is where I was. They can do what they like. I am not going to stay awake. They want to save it, they don't want to save it; it's up to them."
